End of council houses "for life", says Prime Minister
David Cameron has indicated he wants to end the policy of granting council housing "for life".

The Prime Minister said that it is important that tenants have the opportunity to move to find work, with more flexibility needed in the system.

The government is due to give more details of plans to reform social housing today.

It is thought that Housing Minister Grant Shapps will say the scheme will help resolve the "contradiction" where a quarter of a million families lived in overcrowded accommodation, while more than 400,000 homes were larger than the occupants needed.

Mr Schapps told Radio 2: "At the moment mobilty is very, very low, preventing individuals from meeting their aspirations and damaging the economy."

He will outline a new database designed to connect social housing tenants who wish to move homes.

But housing charity Shelter, writing in the Times, says the government must ensure it can justify taking away the only safety and security the poorest in society have.

The Guardian reports the scheme will be designed to help tenants who need to move house because of work of personal reasons.

but there are just not enough council houses in the country to house everyone who can't afford to buy privately. It is traumatic enough moving house without being forced out. And this idea that social mobility can be achieved by 'putting the lazy to work' or stopping supporting people is laughably wrong and more often than not an opinion voiced by people who have no experience of what it is like to live to your means with nothing to spare.

You should be made to sign an agreement when you sign the tenancy that when the children leave home and there is too many rooms, or rooms spare, you should move to smaller accomodation. Its only fair why should you live in a three bed roomed house if their is only a married couple in it.

perhaps cameron should be made to give up one of his mansions, as im sure a four bed house would be more than ample

It's all very well Cameron going on about social housing. Both he and his wife are both multi millionaires and own a number of homes!. I would like to see them try living on benefits and be threatened with losing their home! Don't think they would like it one little bit!

But we must look at this from the other side. You have 4 children and live in a 2 bed house and the family down the road live in a 3/4 bed house and all the children have grown up and left. I don't think the goverment would just remove you and dump you somewhere you didn't want to be. Do we know how many houses there are where the family have grown and left and there is just mum and dad roaming around a big house. Then there are the families like the lady yesterday on the Tv who are overcrowed. We need to use some form of common sence here.My family have grown up and we are going to downsize. That is how it should be.

Can you imagine, you have lived in a council house for 25 years, your family has grown up and you have spent a small fortune getting your home nice. After this the council come along and tell you to move out because they want your home for another family. So now you have to pay for moving and decorating another home and it might be in a rough area. All very well if you have the choice of swapping agreeabl for work purposes, but from other statements by cameron he is going to force people out if there home is too bigb for them.
