Manchester Salford Pathfinder receives £42 million funding boost
Funding confirmed by the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) today will enable the long-term regeneration of inner city residential areas in Manchester and Salford to continue. The Manchester Salford Pathfinder (MSP) is to receive £42 million Housing Market Renewal (HMR) funding for 2010/11 from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) – 100% of the figure originally earmarked by Government, subject to a review of performance. The award is in recognition of the progress that has been made to date to transform neighbourhoods in both cities. A total of £361 million will have been invested in Manchester and Salford through the HMR programme between 2003-11. This has funded a range of activities to tackle deep-seated issues caused by the over supply of unpopular and poor quality housing types in many of the cities’ poorest neighbourhoods. To date 13,000 new homes have been constructed and over 12,000 homes refurbished in the Pathfinder area. Areas to benefit from investment include Beswick, Openshaw, Harpurhey and Moss Side in Manchester and Lower and Higher Broughton, Seedley and Langworthy and Charlestown in Salford. Professor Michael Harloe, Chair of the Manchester Salford Pathfinder’s Partnership Body, said: “Confirmation of this funding is a welcome boost for communities in Manchester and Salford during these difficult times. Reversing decades of decline and securing major change in complex urban environments remain a long term process. "Further investment is still required beyond the current funding period to finish work started in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Manchester and Salford and to meet commitments made to local residents.” Deborah McLaughlin, Regional Director NW at the HCA, said: “It is great news that we are able to confirm the £42m to make sure that Manchester Salford Pathfinder continues its excellent work this coming year. "I have been impressed with how the Pathfinder has been working during the downturn to transform homes, create new jobs and help regenerate communities. "We will now be working closely with all our delivery partners across Manchester and Salford to make sure that this major boost in investment continues to make a real difference in supporting economic recovery.” Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
