Worsley MP calls for debate on social care
Barbara Keeley, who chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Care, has called for a national debate on the state of care funding.

The Worsley and Eccles South MP is trying to raise awareness that social care can be costly to local families.

She said: “We should celebrate the fact that people are living longer but it means that more of us will live with a long term-condition and we will need social care and support."

The Government is expected to produce a white paper on Social Care in Spring next year outlining its plans for social care in the future.

"More people work in social care than in the NHS and more than 1 in 10 of my constituents is providing care to a family member or friend," she said.

Ms Keeley was speaking at a discussion event at the TUC on the future funding of social care.

"Most people don’t realise that social care is not free and some families can end up paying very high costs for care. They often have to use all their savings and assets to do that,” she added.
