Salford tops boozing problems
by Mark Bright
A study by a leading public health body has found that Salford is one of two areas in the North West with the worst record on drinking. The Northwest Public Health Observatory (NWPHO) today published research showing that Salfordians are most at risk from harmful drinking. The Local Alcohol Profiles for England showed that in Salford you'll lose an average of 15 months from your life if you're a man or 8 months if you're a woman from drink-related problems. Academics based at Liverpool John Moores University’s Centre for Public Health say the country is a nation of irresponsible drinkers. Professor Mark Bellis, who runs the NWPHO, recommended a minimum price for alcohol to combat the problems. “It is time to recognise we are not a population of responsible drinkers with just a handful of irresponsible individuals ruining it for others. “We need to see the real cost of alcohol reflected in the price, and warnings about the dangers written large enough for people to recognise the seriousness of the risks.” It is a stance currently being discussed by the ten councils who make up the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities. A minimum price for alcohol would likely stand at 50p per unit, making the lowest price for a six pack of strong lager around £6, or £4.50 for a bottle of wine. The study shows an estimated eight per cent of the people who live across Salford fall into the category of higher risk drinking. This means drinking more than 50 units a week if they are men, and more than 35 units for women, putting Salford and Manchester in the top two spots for the worst authorities in the country. Over 300 authorities throughout the country were surveyed. Another 22 per cent of the city's people are at risk from levels of increased drinking, says the report. Nearly a third of all Salfordians binge drink (29%) meaning they consume at least twice the daily recommended amount of alcohol in one session.
