Keep Hope Maternity ups campaign
The campaign to keep the maternity unit at Hope Hospital (Salford Royal) in Salford is hotting up.

The Maternity Unit at the Stott Lane site, Eccles, is still on course to close.

The decision to shut down Salford's maternity facilities has been deferred since 2007, when both neonatal and maternity units were slated to be cut.

It seems those who want to keep the Maternity Unit in Salford have a compelling argument: firstly, it's a pioneering unit, secondly, there will be technically no new Salfordians, as your birth will now be registered at the nearest delivery unit in Manchester.

Thirdly, the maternity unit is currently one of only twelve maternity units in the northwest.

Along with plans to collect stories of support for the under-review baby unit, the mums and supporters of the campaign will march through the nearby Buile Hill Park on September 4.

Stories of positive experiences are coming out thick and fast supporting the campaign.

Over 2000 fans on Facebook have been sharing their views on the staff and service at the Eccles hospital.

One mum notes on the Facebook page: "I was born at Hope and I had my five children there.

"I could not have had better care, in fact it was so good it inspired me to become a midwife myself.

Maxine Gardner worked at Trafford maternity before it closed in January and says, "I have seen the devastation it has caused the Trafford women to travel to other hospitals. I desperately don't want the same thing to happen to Salford women."

Maria Mattey was in Hope Hospital on 4th Nov 2009. She gave birth to twin girls , but not without difficulty. She writes: "Everything was going well until I started pushing my first baby. Her heart beat was dropping really low and was rushed into theatre, she was born by forceps delivery.

"The consultants/staff were brilliant, my second twin stayed in the special care baby unit for one night. They are now both doing very well and even today I cannot thank the staff enough for what they did that night."
