Free self care event for Salford residents
The Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company (EPP CIC) and NHS Salford co-hosted a free self care event on Thursday 29th July in Salford.

The event united a variety of local service providers which formed a drop-in centre for residents to obtain information and support on health related issues and educate the community about the importance of self care.

The event, which took place at Buile Hill Park Hall in Salford, was a huge success with 30 information stalls, a range of entertainment for the family, a free barbeque and refreshments and well over 300 visitors. Local MP Hazel Blears and the Mayor of Salford also made an appearance to support self care in Salford.

The Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company runs a series of ‘Chronic Disease Self-Management’ courses for anyone who lives with a long-term health condition or chronic illness such as arthritis, asthma, back problems, epilepsy, heart disease, MS, COPD, sickle cell and more. The courses are delivered by volunteers and sessional tutors who themselves have first-hand experience of managing a long-term health condition and have completed the accredited tutor training programme.

Karl Brookes, a spokesperson for NHS Salford, said: “Our innovative schemes and health care services have been recognised as being excellent but we know that there is more work to be done so we can provide services that really make a difference to local people’s lives.”

The courses are structured over six weekly half-day sessions including topics such as relaxation techniques, exercise, coping with depression, communicating with family, friends and health professionals and planning for the future.

The programme is designed to improve quality of life, reduce feelings of isolation and depression, improve eating habits, improve relationships, reduce visits to healthcare professionals and aid participants learning in self-managing their illness.

Jacqui Pollock, Head of Operations at EPP CIC, commented “NHS Salford has commissioned over 50 EPP CIC self management courses, enabling us to help hundreds of people with long-term health conditions in Salford.”
