GMP pay tribute to PC commended in Salford riots
Greater Manchester Police has today paid tribute to the officer who died off duty following a road traffic collision in Flixton.

Gerry Chambers, 41-years-old, came off his Honda motorbike on Flixton Road shortly before 12.50am on Thursday 5 January 2012.

He was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

Gerry was a Police Constable in the Tactical Aid Unit and served in the Specialist Operations Branch, based at Claytonbrook.

He joined GMP in March 2003 having completed eight years and three months service.

Chief Superintendent Neil Wain, commander of the Specialist Operations Branch said: "Gerry is described by his friends and colleagues as 'One Of The Good Guys' who was committed to his role in the Tactical Aid Unit.

"He was awarded a Chief Constable's high commendation in 2011 following the Salford riots. He displayed courage, bravery and a disregard for his own personal safety in protecting his colleagues and the people of Greater Manchester.

"Gerry was a committed family man who adored his wife and children. He was always at his happiest when talking about Jacqueline and the kids.

"He was a committed cyclist who rode to work everyday come rain or shine. He also took part in cycling time trials, representing GMP racing.

"Everybody who came into contact with Gerry instantly liked him. He was respected by everyone and always had a smile on his face and a friendly word."

His colleagues in the TAU added: "Never forgotten Gerry, we will miss you forever RIP".

Yesterday Gerry's wife Jackie said: "He was my best mate and I miss him so much. I feel numb and am just about functioning. I am trying to focus on the children and how they will cope with losing their dad.

"Gerry was an honourable character with a passion for justice. He will be a great loss to the TAU (Tactical Aid Unit) and the Greater Manchester Police."

Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing.

If anyone witnessed this incident or has any information, they are asked to call the Road Policing Unit on 0161 856 7201.
