Police Authority brings in loss adjusting experts to ensure quick and effective resolution of riot claims
Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) has announced the appointment of commercial loss adjuster MYI to handle all high-value and complex claims arising from the August disorder in Manchester and Salford.

The loss adjuster, whose northern operation includes offices in Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle, will exclusively handle all claims over £50k, made by retailers in Manchester city centre and Salford under the Riot Damages Act. MYI could also be asked to examine smaller complex cases.

The appointment indicates GMPA’s objective to ensure the swift and effective resolution of riot claims across the board - from high value vandalism to simple theft or property claims. To date there have been a total of 399 claims against the Police Authority under the Riot Damages Act, with a total value of £5.7m. Policing costs have totalled £3.3m.

A team of three adjusters, experienced in dealing with riot claims and working with the police, is handling the cases, which range from large scale theft to fire damage. MYI has carried out preliminary investigations of claims agreed between insurers and claimants and is now liaising with insurers to finalise the amount to be paid to claimants and the amount to be claimed from the Greater Manchester Police Authority.

David Gillan, Executive Director and Head of Northern Operations at MYI, said: “GMPA has been very proactive in dealing with the issue of claims and we are working with them to ensure that these are dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

“The claims submitted are across a range of retailers and involve straightforward theft of goods to large scale fires, for which we are involving a range of specialists to assist in our analysis. The majority of claims we have seen occurred in the centre of the disturbances, but we have seen a number that are clearly outside the scope of the Riot Damages Act and can only be described as speculative.”

Cllr Paul Murphy, Chairman of Greater Manchester Police Authority, said: “The disturbances of the 9 August had a devastating impact on local businesses, whose property and livelihoods were massively affected by the actions of mindless thugs. We want to ensure that the impact on our communities is minimised, which is why we’ve been swift in appointing loss adjusters.

“We’re pleased to be working with MYI. David and his team have worked in the local market for many years and, importantly, they have the technical expertise to deal with these types of claims fairly and correctly.”
