Community and Police raise Ramadan awareness
Officers from the Salford South Neighbourhood Policing Team have helped to raise awareness of the Muslim festival, Ramadan. Members from all communities were invited to a special event at Eccles Mosque on Liverpool Road where they had the opportunity to meet members of the Mosque, as well as local police to informally discuss Ramadan, the meaning for Muslims living in Salford and how the period will be policed. Officers were also on hand to talk to residents about the issues that affect them on a daily basis and discuss ways that can help improve their quality of life. Sakina Khan, community relations officer for Greater Manchester Police’s Salford Division said, “The day was a great success and it gave people a greater understanding of why the Muslim community take part in Ramadan and what is involved. It also proved a great opportunity for members of different cultural backgrounds to meet their local police officer.” Meanwhile, Salford South Neighbourhood Policing Team will be providing high visibility patrols during the festival. At this time of year Muslims make regular visits to Mosques and, in order to safeguard their valuables at home, householders are being urged to use deadlocks on all external doors and windows and use burglar alarms to help deter possible burglars. Police are urging residents to take extra care of their jewellery and to store it securely in safety deposit boxes in banks and building societies. If jewellery has to be left in the house then residents should ensure that it is kept out of sight and securely locked up in a safe that is bolted into the brickwork or masonry. Inspector Jill Gorse from Salford South Neighbourhood Policing Team said, “Residents should ensure that all external doors and windows are locked, even when they’re in the house. Also, if the property has a burglar alarm make sure that it is switched on when the house is empty or overnight. “Leave lights or a radio on when you are out of the house to give the impression that there is somebody in and take close-up photographs of all your jewellery so that items can be easily identified should they be stolen and recovered.” To report crime call police on 0161 872 5050 or for more information visit www.gmp.police.uk.
