Popular former Eccles bobby retires after 32 years
PC Stephen Splaine who has worked in departments across the Force first joined as a cadet in 1978 before spending seven and a half years in Eccles on Salford Division.

His career has also seen him work in the Toxeth area of Liverpool as well as the Tactical Aid and Firearms units before finally joining the Pennine Neighbourhood Policing Team in Rochdale in 2002.

His 32-year career has had its fair share of drama. In June 2007 he came to the rescue of a woman trapped underneath a vehicle following a collision. She was admitted to hospital with severe injuries but made a full recovery.

He said: “I visited the woman a year after the incident and she said she recognised my voice as it was the same voice that brought her back to life. It was the most humbling thing that anyone has ever said to me.

“My time as an officer has given me the chance to make some great friends both in the police force and the community. Together we have been able to see the arrests of known offenders who have caused pain to the communities they live in.

“One of my proudest moments was my nomination of brave police officer of the year for the part I played in the rescue of an vulnerable male from a flat fire. This coupled with several other incidents make you appreciate the role you play in the community.”

Chief Superintendent John O’Hare for Rochdale Division, said: “I have worked with Steve in a number of roles over the years and I have always been impressed by his drive and commitment. He has left a positive impression on a lot of people and we will miss his infectious enthusiasm.”
