Crime down in North Salford
Residents in north Salford can be assured their neighbourhood is getting safer as figures reveal overall crime is reducing in the area for a third year running. According to figures, crime has reduced by 15 percent between January 2009 and December 2009 compared to the same period last year. That is 493 fewer crimes taking place. Domestic burglary has also gone down by 17 percent, meaning 49 fewer incidents. A number of initiatives and operations have taken place over the past 12 months, which have helped contribute to the reductions. They include Operation Vision, which took place in summer on the Poets Estate, aimed at encouraging residents to report crime to police as well as tackling anti-social behaviour and issuing crime reduction advice. The introduction of monthly Police And Communities Together (PACT) meetings have also proved a success, with residents attending and telling officers how they want their neighbourhood policed and to highlight the priorities they feel should be concentrated on. Officers are also working along side Salford City Council to apply free forensic property marking system SelectDNA, which helps protect valuables, such as laptops, TV’s and ipods from theft. The solution contains a unique DNA code that links each item to the individual household and doesn’t damage the marked property. Inspector Robert Findlow from Salford North Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are committed to improving the quality of life for people in Swinton and Pendlebury and the latest figures show we have achieved considerable success in this for a third year in a row, despite the economic down turn and a predicted rise in crime. “Officers, staff and our partners are working extremely hard to reduce crime and we are well placed to continue this throughout 2010. I want to send a firm message out to potential burglars that despite our positive figures, we will not rest on our laurels and we will continue to target offenders and bring them to justice. “May I remind people that although we are doing the best we can, we rely on members of the public. Crimes or suspicious activity should always be reported and simple steps such as taking valuables out of motor vehicles and keeping homes secure will help prevent you becoming the next victim of crime.” Residents can help keep their homes safer from burglars by ensuring all doors and windows are secure and alarms are set. Use lights, radios and timer switches to make your house look occupied if you go out. To report crime call police on 0161 872 5050 or for more information visit www.gmp.police.uk.
