Sunscreen your property this summer
Police in Salford are urging residents to factor up and protect their home as well as their skin this summer.

As the days get warmer officers are warning residents to secure their sheds, doors and windows to keep burglars at bay.

One in three burglaries happen because windows and doors are left open so residents can reduce the chance of falling victim by a third simply by ensuring that homes are left secure.

Sheds are also targeted by burglars during the summer months as they look for tools they can either sell on or use to smash rear windows.

Crime Reduction Advisor Fiona James said: “We have been fortunate enough to enjoy some nice weather so far this summer, however the sunshine also attracts burglars who will prowl neighbourhoods looking for windows that have been left open.

“While we don’t want residents getting hot and stuffy in their homes, my advice to is to use the common sense approach and shut windows and doors in the rooms that you aren’t in. It only takes a second for a burglar to sneak in and pinch your laptop so play safe and lock up as you leave the room.

“Similarly, residents should secure their sheds using an appropriate lock and hasp, padlock and shed alarm.”

If you see anything suspicious, please call the police on 0161 872 50 50 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. In an emergency, call 999.
