Warning of Offenders selling Illegal Electricity Top Ups
Police across Greater Manchester are warning residents to be aware of doorstep selling involving top up electricity cards.

Offenders are selling illegal electricity top-ups on the doorstep. Some customers are being offered £50 of electricity top-up for a cash payment of £25. There is evidence that the criminals involved are using cloned keys for the payment meters to top them up illegally.
As the energy credit is illegal any customers buying on the doorstep will end up paying twice, first to the criminal and then to the energy supplier.
Energy companies are working closely with the Police at a national and local level. Please report any contact with these offenders immediately to the Police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

I wonder how that differs from when you have a pre-payment meter and they send you those letters claiming you owe them hundreds of pounds and it's a ridiculous lie. (Um, it's a *PRE*payment meter. I don't owe you anything. Duh.) Do they just add the £50 for the dodgy top-up onto the hundreds you supposedly already owe them?
