Drivers urged to keep plates safe
Motorists in Salford are being urged to have safety screws fitted to their cars plate to prevent their vehicle registration plate being stolen.

A clinic will take place at Morrisons, Swinton Hall Road, on Friday 2 July between 10am and 4pm.

Officers from the Salford North Neighbourhood Policing Team will be on hand to distribute specialist tamper proof screws free of charge that can be fitted to a vehicle to make the registration plate harder to remove.

They will also be advising motorists the simple steps they can take to prevent their possessions being stolen from their vehicle.

The theft of number plates helps criminals to clone other cars, and victims might not be aware of what’s happened until speeding and parking tickets start arriving in the post. Cloning is a term used to describe a vehicle that has been stolen and then had its identity changed by using false number plates.

Number plates are used to commit crimes, such as driving off from petrol stations without paying and other motoring offences. Victims can then have difficulty convincing authorities that it was not their car used to commit the offence.

Police Community Support Officer Darren Betts, from the Salford North Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The screws are a really simple way to prevent you from a lot stress and inconvenience from having your number plate stolen.

“People that have their plate stolen usually start to receive parking and speeding tickets which takes a lot of time to resolve so it really is worthwhile having the screws fitted.

Steve added: “It is also important to ensure all valuables are removed from your vehicle. A laptop or mobile phone left on the passenger seat will be too tempting for an opportunist thief and you could return to your car finding the window has been smashed and your property gone. Also, remove any marks that may have been left on your windscreen from a sat nav.”
