SNAP news for Walkden South
The Walkden South community has the chance to meet their local Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service team at events this week.

GMFRS is supporting SNAP (Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Project) in Walkden South throughout the week.

On Tuesday, December 13, the Salford Community Safety Team was at a Winter Warmer event at the Guild Hall between 11.15am and 13pm where they gave lots of winter fire safety advice aimed at the over 50s.

On Saturday, December 17, Blue Watch from Eccles will be at a Christmas family fun day at Fit City in Worsley.

A number of groups will have stalls at the event including the youth service, Salford Council's neighbourhood management and health improvement teams and the Army.

There will also be a Christmas raffle and a cake stall and the event runs from 1pm to 3pm.

SNAP stands for Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Project and is a way of bringing people together to focus on local problems. It aims to clean up neighbourhoods and target criminal activity during a week of action.

These are led by Salford City Council in partnership with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Greater Manchester Police, local housing providers and the Probation Service's community payback team.

SNAPs involve a variety of activities depending on the specific needs of the neighbourhood and include things like:

Removing graffiti
Collecting large items of rubbish
Cutting back overgrown trees
Education programmes in schools about drugs, alcohol and crime
Fire and community safety initiatives
Tackling anti-social behaviour
Crime reduction

The targeted action should result in longer term improvements and make neighbourhoods safer, more pleasant and enjoyable places to live.
