Salford Mayoress faces the heat
The Mayoress of Salford, Councillor Val Burgoyne, donned full protective clothing, breathing apparatus and used specialist cutting equipment in order to remove the roof of a vehicle last week as part of a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service training day. The training day - which took place on Friday, September, 16 - was designed to show local Mayors just what type of challenges firefighters face, the specialist equipment the Service requires and the varied nature of the firefighter role. Other exercises at the Service Training Centre in Manchester included Councillor Burgoyne witnessing a rope rescue demonstration and familiarising herself with the process whereby firefighters use breathing apparatus to enter burning and smoke-filled buildings. Speaking after her experience, Councillor Burgoyne said: "Today has been really interesting. Taking part in the road traffic collision exercise was excellent and the whole day has demonstrated to me just how brave our firefighters are. The Mayoress added: "There's a lot more to a firefighter's role than putting fires out and rescuing people from burning buildings. Speaking to some of the crew members made me realise the whole range of scenarios they often face." County Fire Officer and Chief Executive, Steve McGuirk, said: "I think the Mayors who attended the training day had some fun whilst learning about what we do. However, there is a serious side in that we - like other organisations - need to show that we're providing value-for-money. "It's important that Members understand what we do and how that is changing. This kind of hands-on experience is invaluable when it comes to showing people the kind of things our crews tackle on a daily basis." Source: Greater Manchester Fire.
