Fatal Distraction
SHOCKED motorists watched in horror as firefighters and fire service volunteers acted out real life Road Traffic Collisions (RTC) in demonstrations across Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) launched the ‘Fatal Distraction’ campaign on Wednesday, May 11 in support of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action for Road Safety aimed at reducing injuries on our roads. During 2010 / 2011 GMFRS attended 793 Road Traffic Collisions across Greater Manchester. International statistics reveal that worldwide 1.3 million people are killed as a result of road accidents each year, with road traffic collisions being the number one killer of young people. The aim of the campaign is to drive down this figure through educating drivers and their passengers on the harsh realities of bad driving habits, such as not wearing a seat belt and speeding. The audiences at the demonstrations fell silent as they experienced first-hand how dangerous the consequences of a crash can be. Director of Prevention and Protection Peter O'Reilly said: “By raising drivers' awareness we hope people really think about the consequences of their actions. "Our aim is to continue to put across a firm message to help drive down the number of people injured on our roads and do everything we can to support the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety over the next 10 years.” Photo: Road traffic accident demonstration in Eccles Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
