Fire Director Neil O'Connor visits Greater Manchester
Neil O’CONNOR Director of Fire, Resilience and Emergencies visited Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) to find out about the many fire safety initiatives taking place across the 10 boroughs.

The visit began at Fire Service Headquarters in Swinton where he met County Fire Officer and Chief Executive Steve McGuirk along with other members of the Corporate Leadership Team.

In the afternoon Neil arrived at Moss Side Fire Station to a warm welcome of local school children, who were out on the yard taking part in a fire service drill. He then moved onto the fire station’s boxing gym where a group of super fit youngsters were in the middle of a vigorous training session.

Neil bravely agreed to hold up boxing training pads for six year old Otto Bruchard, who has a natural talent for the sport and looks promising to follow in his Great, Great Uncle’s footsteps, Gene Tunney, who was the World Heavyweight Champion 1926 to 1928.

The day ended with the Service’s Initiatives Roadshow where a number of small displays showcased a range of community engagement projects organised by GMFRS currently running throughout Greater Manchester - closing the day Neil joined Moss Side’s Green Watch in the station’s community room for a quick chat and refreshments.

Neil who is the Director of Fire, Resilience and Emergencies for the Department of Communities and Local Government said: "I was extremely impressed with the many different initiatives taking place across Greater Manchester.

“It was a great opportunity for me to hear about the different approaches the Service has taken to engage with their local communities to improve fire safety.”

County Fire Officer and Chief Executive Steve McGuirk said: “It was a real honour to meet Neil, as well as a great opportunity for us to share and showcase the great initiatives and giant strides we are making working with our local community.”
