Irlam chemical spill update.
At 8:12 am fire crews were called to the report of an unknown liquid leaking from a thousand litre storage container on the yard of an industrial unit on Irlam Industrial Estate off Liverpool Road, Irlam. Three engines and a specialist command unit were called to the scene, supported by a specialist fire officer trained in dealing with hazardous materials. Firefighters using chemical protection suits completed an initial survey in an attempt to identify the liquid and the size and nature of the spillage, also ensuring it was contained to the site. As they were unable to identify the liquid the crews requested the attendance of a technical team to assist and as a precaution, working with colleagues from GMP, temporarily evacuated 20 people from adjacent industrial units. The specialist technical team quickly identified the material as a low risk solvent based liquid, and an operation to clean up the spillage has begun. No one was reported as injured at the scene and the original temporary safety cordon has now been reduced in size. Source: GMF.
