New Deputy County Fire Oficer appointed
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are extremely pleased to announce that the next Deputy County Fire Officer will be Jim Owen, who previously held the post of Assistant County Fire Officer (Fire Safety).

Chairman of the Fire Authority Councillor Paul Shannon said, “The public of Greater Manchester rightly deserve a fire and rescue service which is led by Fire Officers with passion, commitment and experience. I believe that together with management team colleagues Jim Owen will drive through further improvements and we will continue to ensure that the people of Greater Manchester are provided with a high performing, modern and community focused service”.

County Fire Officer Steve McGuirk said, “Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is an exciting, demanding and rewarding service to be part of. Jim has played a major part in the development and improvement of the service and I am looking forward to working even more closely with him to continue to provide a first class public service”.

Jim joined Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) in December 2008 as Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Fire Safety.

He started with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service in 1985 and during the next 15 years, he carried out a number of operational and fire safety roles until 2000, when he took the post of Strategic Staff Officer (Assistant Divisional Officer) working for the Chief Fire Officer.

This was followed by Station Command at Blackburn Fire Station and then in 2003 he was promoted into the Fire Risk Management Department at FSHQ, where in 2004 he became an Area Manager and Head of the Department.

He later moved out of FSHQ to become the Head of Service Delivery with responsibility for the fire stations and fire safety teams across Central and West Lancashire.

Jim represents the Northwest Fire and Rescue Services on the Chief Fire Officers' Association's National Fire Safety Committee.
