M(other) is an exhibition of ink drawings and books by Helen Sargeant exploring abjection through representations of the pregnant body.

“The subject matter stems from a personal and political experience of motherhood, and a desire to challenge existing ideals and images of the body.” Helen Sargeant

This intimate series of drawings, deals directly with the female body looking at fertility, sexuality, fragmentation, loss and pain. The artwork evidences ideas of container versus contained, interior versus exterior and nurture versus control.

Helen Sargeant is an artist, academic and socially engaged practitioner. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally on solo and collaborative projects. Her approach to making art utilises a diverse range of media; animation, digital video, sound, performance and installation all of which are influenced by a background in painting. This body of work showcases drawings and books which have been produced over the last year.

Exhibition Dates & Times: Monday 29 September – Friday 17 October, 10.00am – 4.00pm
Please note: there are literature readings in the gallery between 1.00pm - 2.00pm on Thursday 2 October and Tuesday 14 October.
