Salford's new Lowry depicts hoodie life
The matchstick men are back – but this time wearing hoods.

Tinned up terraces, bling and faceless and disaffected hoodies inhabit the bleak street scapes of Joe Coffey’s paintings. In his hometown of Salford, Joe is already being compared to Lowry.

Away from the shiny and sterile confines of MediaCityUK and the prestigious Lowry Art Centre at Salford Quays, Joe depicts what he calls “the other side of Salford” – the destruction and demonising of working class communities.

Joe says: “I’m not glorifying hoodies or stereotyping Salford, it’s not about that. I’m just documenting what I see around me – there’s regeneration projects going on all over the inner city, but how much of that money will actually benefit Salford’s communities and our youth?”

Joe Coffey’s Hood Life, featuring oils, acrylics, sculpture and sketches, runs at the Langworthy Cornerstone, 451 Liverpool Street, Salford, M6 5QQ until New Year 2011, with previews from from 13th September. For further details on exhibition opening times and dates, phone 0161 212 4400.
