Guided Tour through northwest history - Weaste
by Tom Rodgers
Take a guided tour through the famous and interesting people who are buried in Weaste Cemetery, including the Salford's first member of parliament, Joseph Brotherton. On Sunday, September 12 the Friends of Weaste Cemetery (FoWC) take you on a trip through history with tales of the canal-swimming folk hero Mark Addy. Those interested in military history will discover the military legend who was awarded the Victoria Cross, the most prestigious award a British soldier could receive for gallantry in the face of the enemy. There will be two tours, one in the morning 11.00am - 12.30pm and then at 1.00pm - 2.30pm. Due to popular demand the tour will also be repeated on the 21st November. Deborah Wall, from FoWC, is hoping to conduct both a 'Notable Salford Residents' tour and a 'War Graves' tour, in the morning and afternoon sessions. There are some great stories in there from the lives of famous musicians, statesmen and oddballs, I'd recommend this even if you don't think it's your kind of thing, the cemetary covers a vast green area and is especially pretty to walk through on a sunny day. Find out about your history at Weaste Cemetary off Eccles New Road, Salford. Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
