Unseen photographs of the Rolling Stones in new exhibition
Possibly the most remarkable pictures ever taken of the Rolling Stones will be exhibited at the Lowry in September as part of photographer Philip Townsend’s new exhibition.

And this picture of the band on Belgrave Square in 1963, when they were broke and hungry and seeking their first record contract, comes with a fascinating story.

Townsend recalls the photograph was taken “Mick said, ‘I’m really hungry mate. Go buy us a chicken’. So we got Bill and Brian and went up King’s Road where there was a little barbeque place and got them two chickens. They had no money at all – they were getting £15 a gig. We headed off to Belgrave Square where I saw this house on a side street with graffiti all over it. Andrew Oldham had told them they had to look mean and nasty”.

Between 1960 and 1969 Philip Townsend worked as a photographer for many leading magazines and newspapers both in the UK and abroad. While other photographers took portraits, often closely cropped, Townsend widened his frame to include backgrounds, landscapes and a sheer feel of the period.

In the 60s, there was an explosion of new music and fashion which still has echoes today. Townsend was at the beating heart of the revolution and captured unforgettable images in an imitable style which speaks down the years about the people and events that made the Sixties swing.

For The Lowry this is a remarkable first. It will be Townsend's first exhibition in a major UK public gallery and will see some images on show for the first time.

Documenting the people, the style and the musical revolution, this vibrant exhibition of over sixty images captures some of the most iconic faces of the Sixties including Grace Kelly, Twiggy, The Beatles and private fashion shows at Mary Quant’s headquarters.
