by Tom Rodgers Maggie Jones' recent death and memorial was a shock to fans of the show, but Blanche will be remembered in the most fitting way, by an acting legend joining the cast on her behalf. June Whitfield is famous for her roles in some of the biggest comedy vehicles in this country, including Absolutely Fabulous, Carry On films and work with Arthur Askey and Tony Hancock. Now, as new character May, she's set to join the Coronation Street team. She has been signed up to play Blanche's friend, who will come to Weatherfield to tell Deidre (Anne Kirkbride) how her on-screen mother died. News of Blanche's death will reach the cobbles in a couple of months. In the show she is currently house-sitting for a friend in Portugal. A special service celebrating the life of Maggie Jones, who played Blanche, was held at Salford Cathedral last week. The actress died at the end of last year.
