Ten years of Salford University and Channel M

Ten years of Salford University and Channel M

Over 1,000 students, ten Royal Television Society nominations and hundreds of graduates working in the media, are just some of the results of the unique partnership between the University of Salford and Channel M, which celebrates its tenth year this week.

To mark the occasion, Channel M will be transmitting award-winning programmes made by Salford students since 1998. There will also be a reunion of staff and students and a special dedication at the forthcoming Royal Television Society (North West) awards.

Over 1,000 Salford students have worked on Channel M programmes since 1998 in a huge variety of roles including presenters, researchers, camera operators, producers and directors. The programmes cover four strands – arts, documentary, short films and debate.

Such has been the level of participation from students that the studio on the University campus was actually designed and built by trainee broadcast engineers, many of whom now work across the UK media industry.

Of the ten Royal Television Society award nominations acquired over the past decade, Salford students have been on the winner’s podium on four occasions, having produced some of the most successful student television strands in the country.

Professor Ron Cook is Head of the University’s International Media Centre which houses the Channel M project. He said: “No other university offers its students access to a TV channel which, like Channel M, is broadcast as a commercial concern. People in Manchester can tune their sets in and watch student productions from Salford as can satellite viewers across Western Europe.

“We tell students when they arrive that it will be identical to working for a TV station. Sometimes that can be a bit intimidating but they soon gain confidence and the invaluable experience of working for a real TV station.”

David Johnson, the General Manager of Channel M said: “Over 40% of our workforce is made up of Salford graduates. Having people come into the company who not only have relevant work experience, but are also familiar with how we operate is a huge benefit for us.”
