Salford City College health cadets head to Uganda
For most young people under the age of 25, the summer months are predominantly spent in the sun, on the beach, in a beer garden or at sweaty night clubs in tropical locations dotted throughout the Balearics; NOT embarking on a charity trip to Uganda. Salford City College students Emily Cocker and Leonie Grundy are going against the norm and doing just that.

The pair, both part of the NHS Nursing Cadet program based at Walkden Sixth Form Centre, beat off stiff competition from around 500 other students to secure their places on the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award trip, along with just five other students based in the North West. Emily and Leonie both joined the Duke of Edinburgh Award since enrolling at Salford City College and have been involved with activities such as camping and bag packing at local supermarkets whilst progressing through their grades.

When asked why they wanted to go to Uganda, Emily explained “It sounds cheesy, but it’s always been a dream of mine to go to Africa – it’s a really exciting opportunity”, Leonie added “It’s an opportunity that we’re probably not going to have again; it would be a mistake not to go.”

The trip has been arranged in conjunction with Rossendale-based charity Agapao International who work globally with people in deprived communities, developing skills to improve their quality of life.

The NHS Nursing Cadet program is a partnership between Salford City College, Salford Royal Foundation Trust and Skills for Health, which provides students with essential knowledge and skills to equip them for a career within the Health Care Sector.

Barbara Douglas, Cadet Clinical Educator for the Salford Cadets said “I’m very proud of the girls for applying for the trip; they are dedicated to helping others and so taking advantage of a fantastic opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. Each student has to raise approximately £1,100.00 to pay for the trip, which will be achieved through sponsorship, bag packing at supermarkets and various charity events. Both Emily and Leonie will have both mine and all of Salford Cadets’ support in reaching their targets.”
