£70m upgrade for three Salford schools
A deal has been signed which will see three Salford schools benefit from £70 million worth of improvements, say Salford Council. The investment will result in new buildings, ICT and a 25-year maintenance agreement for St Ambrose High RC High School, St Patrick’s RC High School and Moorside High and Moorside Primary School. The cash comes from the second phase of the Building Schools for the Future Programme. St Ambrose Barlow RC High School will be based on the Wardley site and will take 750 11-16 pupils, and 250 post-16 students. This will be the first Roman Catholic Sixth Form in the city. St Patrick's RC High School and Arts College will remain on its existing site, providing facilities for 900 11-16 pupils. Moorside High School with 1,050 pupils and Moorside Primary School with 630 primary school pupils – will be located on the current playing field. The development will also include a youth centre to replace the Dean's Activity Centre; a Learning Recovery Unit to support pupils who need extra support for their learning and accommodation for Salford's Music and Performing Arts Service. St Ambrose Barlow and St Patrick’s will open in April 2013, while Moorside will be completed by September 2013. Councillor John Merry, Leader of Salford City Council said: “Major investment has already taken place at Walkden High School and Irlam and Cadishead College, both of which opened this September, while Oasis Academy Media City is due to open in September 2012. "These changes will make a huge difference to the standard of our education facilities creating high quality learning environments for Salford’s young people and additional community facilities.” In addition to the investment in high school buildings, all Salford high schools will benefit from £17m in investment in ICT, say the council.
