Salford students given tech masterclass
Upcoming students were given tips today by Pollyanna Woodward from TV's The Gadget Show on how to use tech like the iPad for easier study.

Harry James, 19, is an English student at Salford University and a member of the Students in Free Enterprise group.

He said: "We were shown how easy it is to organise your life on the iPad and set up study groups online for our friends.

"Our enterprise group involves a lot of meetings and together with
university, it can get a bit hectic, so anything that helps is brilliant."

Pollyanna, 28, rolled into The Trafford Centre aboard communication giant Three's specially equipped Broadband Bus in a bid to address the city's internet problems.

Aside from London, Manchester is the only region in the UK to have more people connected to the internet than the UK average of 26 per cent.

Drummer Lloyd Preece, 20, said: "The mobile internet is great and if I'm out at a gig and hear a good drum track I can now download it straight away.

"If we want to arrange a band practice we can send online messages for free to each other and save a bit of cash."

Pollyanna said: "With so many people about to go away to
university it's important they can easily keep in touch with family and friends back home.

"We've shown them how they can do that, but also how they can use
technology to download easy-to-cook recipes or stream course seminars and read books online."

Charlotte Blanchard, director of products and services at Three, said: "We believe it is a misconception that everyone is online and knows how to make the most of being connected to the internet.

"More than 10 million Britons - the size of Britain's five largest cities - have never been online before."

Three's investment in Manchester has given the area an 80 per cent growth in network sites - from 73 sites to 131.

It has said it will get 100,000 people connected to the internet for the first time by 2012.
