Salford Uni clearing places halve
by Tom Rodgers
Salford University have half the number of clearing places they had last year, SalfordOnline was told this morning. A spokeswoman from Salford University said this morning: "At the moment we have between 300 and 400 clearing places but they’re filling up fast. "This compares to 880 clearing places that were available last year. UCAS.ac.uk is still the place to go for students worried about getting a university place. 44% of students failed to get the A-Level results they need to get onto their first choice course. 850,000 grades were awarded this year, with A* making up 8% of all the grades given. The A grade was given to over a quarter of school students (26.7%). 97.6% of students passed their A-Level exams, up slightly from last year's 97.5%. This makes 2010 the 28th consecutive year that A-Level pass rates have increased in the UK. But fears are growing over a university funding system that is unable to support the hundreds of thousands of applicants. In their first budget the coalition government announced £900m cuts to the Department for Business, Skills and Innovation, which looks after further education. This means that work experience is even more vital than before, especially in the fields of law, media production, journalism and medicine.
