Salford University to tackle graduate unemployment
The University of Salford has developed an innovative scheme to give its unemployed and under-employed graduates the professional training and work experience they need to join the workforce The Graduate Gateway scheme starts with a five day programme of intensive training which focuses on each individual’s personal and professional strengths. Topics include communication skills, leadership and teamwork, career management and organisational skills. The programmes sessions will be delivered by experts in the field from communications and creativity facilitated by Tim Vaughan of Inspiring Minds. All the Inspiring Minds training sessions are devised and delivered in a ‘brain-friendly’ way and employ techniques such as emotional intelligence, accelerated learning, ‘brain gym’ and neuro-linguistic programming to achieve great results. The scheme will also feature the Army providing the graduates with leadership and team work skills at the local Manchester and Salford Universities Officer Training Corps barracks. The training encourages graduates to take charge of their careers and sell themselves effectively to employers. Once the training programme is completed graduates are placed in small and medium-sized businesses to gain the valuable work experience they need for their CVs. Employers and graduates are matched according to the skills a business requires and the needs of each individual. The scheme is free for the University’s unemployed graduates and under-employed graduates who are working in jobs that do not require their qualifications and skills. Tim Ward one of the organisers of the scheme and Work Experience Advisor said: “The current graduate job market is extremely competitive and having a good degree is not always enough to get a job. Employers often expect relevant work experience and the Salford scheme will help graduates to really stand out from the crowd.” The February and March programmes are full but more will run in July and October. Applicants must be graduates of the University of Salford. Due to problems with spam only SalfordOnline members can now leave comments.
