Salford University helps young people turn wasteland into oasisDuring January and February 2010, the University of Salford has been helping young people living in Broughton to transform a piece of derelict land into a garden oasis The creative project, which involves the University, Salford Youth Service, the Triangle Community Garden and artist Kerry Bertram, has enabled young residents of the Camp Street area to use recycled and other objects to make stepping stones, giant insects and resin dewdrops to decorate the garden. The results of their hard work were unveiled on Saturday, 20 February, when all the pieces they created were installed in the garden, watched by their families and friends. The Triangle Community Garden arose from resident Beryl Hawke’s concern that the young people on her estate should be given the opportunity to take part in positive activity. Over the past 18 months she has worked with a group of young people to transform a triangular piece of derelict land into an oasis of fruit and vegetable growing which is open to the local residents of the estate. The Faculty of Arts, Media & Social Sciences got involved through the work of Arts Development Officer Harriet Morgan-Shami, who has been developing projects with Salford Youth Service for the past four years, offering young people the opportunity to work with professional artists in a variety of contexts. Harriet said: “All of these projects have supported young people to creatively express their feelings and concerns about growing up in Salford. “This project continues that theme, helping young people to become more involved with their community through an emphasis on “green” issues such as recycling and sustainable living, and to take ownership and express pride in their achievements through creative activity.” The project has been supported from the beginning by Area Youth Work Manager Chris Rice, who has encouraged the young people to get involved and helped Beryl to access opportunities to extend the potential of the project.
