   A helping hand for unemployed young people in Salford
Unemployed young people in Salford are being given a helping hand into employment and no longer having to rely on handouts with the creation of up to 800 new jobs through the Future Jobs Fund. So far seventy Salford residents are already working on six month paid placements, having been previously unemployed for more than six months. There are a wide range of placements available across the public, voluntary and creative sectors making sure that the opportunities appeal to as many young people as possible. Dominic, from Higher Broughton, who had been unemployed and claiming benefits for a year before starting the scheme said: “If you’re on benefits you lose track of life. You’re just filling a book in. I’m very grateful that I’m in work now, I like it. I like being out and about. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.” He is now working with the council's environmental services in gardening and grounds work as well as studying for an NVQ in horticulture one day a week. New jobs are being created that require varying skills from creche workers to gym assistants and administrators for those who prefer the comforts of working indoors. The Salford led Greater Manchester wide programme is the biggest in the country, with an estimated £5 million being pumped into Salford's economy. "This massive investment will boost the local economy by helping more young people find work and benefit local employers with new employees who are keen to learn. The Future Jobs Fund is lead by Salford and is being applied throughout Greater Manchester," said Cllr John Merry, leader of Salford City Council. The Future Jobs Fund is also a part of the 'Young Person’s Guarantee' established by the government this year that guarantees that all young people between the ages of 18 and 24 who have been looking for work for a year will get an offer of a job, work experience, or training lasting at least 6 months. For those a bit wild at heart there is currently an opening for an adventure sports assistant with the charity Child Action North West. Or for anyone who loves children and would like to work with them could make a real difference to their own prospects and the lives of others by becoming a creche worker with local charity the Salford Foundation. Creative Industries in Salford (CRIS) supports media, film, TV, theatre and music professionals who are delivering work in Salford. They are also hoping to fill a vacancy and are looking for a new development worker to work with them full time for six months.
