Through the voice of Linda McAvan the S&D Group of the European Parliament reacted about PIP breast prosthesis gate and denounced the lack of regulation in plastic surgery. Socialists and Democrats want European Union to take measures to restore citizen's trust in the health regulating system. For Socialists and Democrats, the first step is to estimate how much women are affected by those implants: "The proposal in first instances, the European Commission yesterday asked Member States to gather information urgently. They are setting up a special committee which has to report by the end of January on the finding. It is to find how biggest the problem is with this particular implant, PIP implant, that is the first thing" Linda McAvan said."I think people would be quite shocked to know that today we can't say which women have which implants. Now, we need to look again at this law. We need the European Commission to hold an urgent review of the current legislation and propose changes to close the purpose. Because in my country, when the government asks, it is often private sector companies who do this kind of cosmetics surgery, "who has those implants?" they can't tell you as they don't keep registers: this is not acceptable."S&D Group called on the European Commission to increase regulation on medical devices. "That's not acceptable. Something went badly wrong in the whole regulation framework in France but also across Europe. So we need to review that law and we have asked for an urgent meeting to take place of the environment comity to look at this issue" Linda McAvan ended. LINDA McAVAN (S&D MEP) SAYING (ENGLISH): "Yes, obviously, this is a European problem. A French company made implants but they sold them all around the European Union. So women, mainly women, some men as well, because it is different kinds of implants, have been affected in many many different countries. And so now, what we want to do, is to say, hang on a minute, here we had women, given breast implants made from silicon that was supposed to be for mattresses and have been put inside women's bodies. That's not acceptable. Something went badly wrong in the whole regulation framework in France but also across Europe. So we need to review that law and we have asked for an urgent meeting to take place of the environment comity to look at this issue." 3. CUTTAWAY: VARIOUS OF LINDA McAVAN 4. LINDA McAVAN (S&D MEP) SAYING (ENGLISH): "Well, at the time, Socialists MEPs asked for tougher regulation. We wanted for example, registers to be kept of people who had implants. I think people would be quite shocked to know that today we can't say which women have which implants. Now, we need to look again at this law. We need the European Commission to hold an urgent review of the current legislation and propose changes to close the purpose. It is to find how biggest the problem is with this particular implant, PIP implant, that is the first thing. Then we need to look again the all law. Should we have more controls, should the European Medicine Agency on London have a bigger say? We have laws on medicines, if a medicine goes wrong there is a all European system of reporting to the central public authorities where the problem is, an obligation on medical professionals and on companies to report, a system to ensure the products. This system is not valuable on the same way for medical devices." 7. CUTTAWAY: LINDA McAVAN TALKING 8. LINDA McAVAN (S&D MEP) SAYING (ENGLISH): "Now we find that we needed more regulation. In France nobody asked any questions, the company who made the silicone is a French company does it for 10 years, and nobody asked any questions. This is not acceptable. Something has gone wrong in this system. We need public authorities to be much more involved or public will not have confidence in our systems unless we make some changes." 9.
