UNICEF Is Supporting a National Strategic Plan For The Promotion of Hygiene Education in Schools in Mali
UNICEF is supporting the Malian Government to develop a National Strategic Plan for the Promotion of Hygiene Education in Schools.

For children in Koutienso Primary School near Segou, life at school has completely changed.

A new pump provides clean water for everyone.

Soap and clean water within easy reach means children can wash their hands at key moments in the day - after using the latrine and before eating their mid-day meal. A simple step to keep the children healthy.

Josephine is also benefiting from separate latrines for girls, providing the privacy and hygiene they need.

It's estimated that only 14 percent of schools in Mali have separate latrines for girls.

Poor sanitation discourages many girls from attending school, however simple, low cost water, sanitation and hygiene solutions can immediately boost a child's opportunity for learning.

With improved access to clean water, latrines and soap for washing hands, fewer children will fall victim to preventable diseases at school and can be more productive in class.
