The 12th award ceremony for the L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science took place on March 4 in the presence of Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, and Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, Chairman of L'Oréal and L'Oréal Corporate Foundation. Professor Günter Blobel, 1999 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, presided over the ceremony; he was also the president of the jury that selected the five laureates from the numerous candidatures submitted. Each laureate received US$100,000 in recognition to their contribution to science.
