Olympic Summit Held on Disability

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games should give councils the chance to change perceptions about disability, a conference has heard.

The summit was organised by the Government Olympic Executive to prompt debate about how the Paralympics can impact on disabled people. Other ideas discussed include using the internet to inform people of accessible venues across the country, and Britain’s Paralympian heroes visiting schools to inspire children.
Olympics minister Tessa Jowell said: “London 2012 should set new benchmarks for inclusion and accessibility. I want every council in the land to feel inspired by the Paralympics to push their own boundaries and change perceptions about disability and provision for people with disabilities.”
