DLA victory confirmed
The following communication has kindly been forwarded by SalfordOnline member Joanne2

This week we received the fantastic news that the government has abandoned its plans to take away the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) from disabled people living in residential care.

This is a massive victory and we would like to say a huge thank you for campaigning on this issue.

Disability Living Allowance enables people with a learning disability to get out into their communities and visit friends and family. If the change had gone ahead, it would have left 80,000 people trapped at home.

Unfortunately, however, there are still major threats to disabled people's income and independence.

For example, the replacement of DLA with the new Personal Independence Payment could have a negative impact on people with a learning disability, as the government wants to reduce spending on the benefit by 20%. This could lead to hundreds of thousands of disabled people losing the money they rely on to meet extra disability-related costs.

This week's announcement is wonderful news, but we still have much to do to ensure that cuts to benefits do not leave people with a learning disability isolated or living in poverty.

Many thanks again for your support. That support will be more important than ever over the coming months as the campaign to maintain dignity and a decent income for disabled people continues.
