Head To Space For Ground-Breaking Technology

New hospitals, schools and offices in the North West can now be experienced before they are constructed, thanks to Salford based architecture and management company Space Group.

The national architectural group, which has recently opened its Salford office, is one of the first practices to appreciate the benefits of the latest pioneering technology, in the form of Autodesk Revit.

Space group is currently working on an extension to the existing Knowsley Schools programme as part of the government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative. This extension to the proposed 9 Centres for Learning will see the creation of a new 200 place all through Special Needs School and up to 4 new primary schools with associated early years and Special Educational Needs provision. _Space are aiding the delivery of this vision for the schools and the council through its use of Revit technology.

Project Director on the project Steve Brooks said: “By constructing a BIM (Building Information Model) of the entire project in Revit, many aspects of the design have been influenced significantly. The impact of changes made to the design has become a fluid process, and assessing the implications of those changes has been assisted throughout the process. A process we first utilised on Sunderland BSF.

“Such a process enables designers to maintain control over the design as the construction process evolves, which has been of considerable benefit to all involved. Structural and mechanical co-ordination has been significantly improved to date.”

CEO of Space Group, Rob Charlton said: “The new schools are part of a large scheme we are involved in at the moment, with Balfour Beatty and Knowsley Council. This huge investment will have a significant impact on learning for many years to come

“Being able to use Revit in the project process is invaluable, as without it, the essence of the design would have been lost. It is very satisfying to be able to create a design that is precisely what you have visualised, slice by slice and moment by moment. We can use this to take our ideas to clients, helping them to have a better understanding of our proposals and minimising waste by understanding the construction before it gets on site.
