Manchester data centre pioneers virtualisation of servers
SERVER hosting company Melbourne is launching its virtual server solution in December after successful beta trials earlier in the year.
The new virtualisation service will offer improved speed, better reliability and greater power efficiency for business users.Modern servers have become so powerful that a large proportion of computing power is not utilised. The creation of several virtual servers on one physical server, rather than using separate additional servers, creates better harnessing of resources.
This also gives a greener solution to storage needs, as servers require vast amounts of energy to power and cool. Furthermore, four servers can operate from one physical server, which means one power source for all four.
The reliability factor is of key importance with Melbourne offering a 100% Service Level Agreement, which is almost unheard of in the industry. Any prospect of downtime is a thing of the past, as no crucial data is reliant on any one physical server. The seamless migration from a physical server format to virtualisation will ensure businesses can migrate data without disruption to the new service.
Melbourne has already invested over £100,000 to bring the technology to market this year. It hopes to recoup the outlay within a year. The Manchester Technopark business, which owns its own dedicated server facility, will be able to substantially expand on the same number of servers.
Daniel Foster managing director of Melbourne comments: “The benefits in terms of continuity, utilisation and conservation of energy are going to be attractive to prospective and current clients that wish to move over.”
Foster continues: “We believe virtualisation will become the default option in the server market as the technology evolves and becomes more familiar. However, it is still early days and the market will have to be educated on its potential. We are hopeful that there will be a 50% uptake over the next two years.”
Melbourne currently manages 2,000 servers at its dedicated data storage centre; each server can host hundreds of companies’ crucial information.
