Duncan Johnson: When I joined the business as all other directors I took delivery of my standard issue car, but I have set down the challenge to my co directors and other people in the business by cycling to work on a regular basis

A LEADING architectural and management firm that has recently opened its North West office in the Digital World Centre at Salford Quays has also launched a new facilities division.

The Space Group, which also has offices in Leeds and Newcastle Upon Tyne, has appointed Duncan Johnson to spearhead Space Facilities, which looks after the external and internal maintenance and operation of buildings throughout their use.

Duncan will lead one of the biggest building surveying teams in the North, the programme management function, and the division’s development into soft facilities services, including grounds maintenance, cleaning and catering

With existing public and commercial clients, managing director Duncan has been eager to start his new role in the firm: “Space has always developed environments which are efficient and sustainable, however with introduction of the skills and knowledge the facilities business brings we will be able to help clients protect their capital investment as well as reduce ongoing running costs. With resources so precious and expensive nowadays, there will be no building owner or occupier not currently giving cost in use consideration.”

The team are also making their mark by pioneering research into the management of energy performance certificates and a focus on waste and recycling in construction, minimising the use of all resources.

Duncan puts his money where his mouth is, so to speak, when it comes to the environment. “When I joined the business as all other directors I took delivery of my standard issue car, but I have set down the challenge to my co directors and other people in the business by cycling to work on a regular basis. The 7½ mile journey takes ten minutes less on a bike than it does in a car, so not only am I helping save the environment, but I’m also getting a few extra minutes in bed!

“It’s such a bonus that everyone here is on the same wavelength, and our approach is integrated. Buildings use so much of our expensive and precious resource that we hope to offer a service to new and existing clients who will show undoubted benefits not only to the environment, but also to the bottom line in the current climate.”

_space is a team of 150 specialists in all areas of the built environment, with offices in Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester and Leeds.

The practice brings together architecture, landscape design, urban design and planning alongside construction management and building surveying and facilities to address the challenges of the natural and built environment to create living, working, healing and educational spaces that are functional, sustainable and inspirational.

_space projects are ultimately about people rather than buildings, creating space’ within five key areas of education, healthcare, commercial, residential and regeneration to produce lasting benefits for each development’s users and the surrounding communities.
