Salford Reds stadium build open for bids

Local contractors looking for their next big project could have something to gain from Peel.

The property and construction group have released briefs to contractors bidding to take part in the £15m build of the Salford City Reds stadium at Barton.

It has been a fractious few years for the stadium build, which was approved by Salford City Council in November 2005 but ground to a halt after local residents groups complained about building on green field land. In summer of 2008 the club was hit by uncertainty again after
the Salford City Reds stadium developer, Red City Developments, went into administration.

The stadium has been scaled down in size from an initial 22,000 seats, to a more modest 12-15,000 seats.

It is to include facilities for community sports clubs to use, including two pitches and changing rooms specifically for their use.

The club has handed over the construction of the stadium to Peel, who hope to have the building completed in time for the opening of the 2011 rugby league season.
