by Tony Hayward
Wednesday night saw the presentation of CAMRA's Neil Richardson Award to Kath White, landlady of the Lamp Oil (Eagle Inn) on Collier Street opposite the historic Salford Bath house. The pub was packed with regulars and members of North Manchester Campaign for Real Ale. Also present were representatives from the Joseph Holt Brewery.
The award was presented to Kath by Sue, wife of the late Neil Richardson. This award is for a fine unspoilt and traditional pub selling 'real ale' the ale being Joseph Holts mild and bitter at the Eagle.
The pub was lovely and warm as I walked in and had a very friendly atmosphere. It was apparent that the regulars are very proud of their pub.
One infamous patron, pointed to a large collection of photographs on the wall and woefully remarked "most of them are dead".
I recommend that you visit the 'Lamp Oil', as it is colloquially known. It receives a motley crowd of visitors from all walks of life and is a great example of the Salford community pub which is sadly disappearing.

I've never understood what defines a community pub. Is it one that focus on the peope in the immediate area, i.e. locals? |
