Daily Mail slates Salford
By: Tony Flynn.

Today's Daily Mail newspaper - a paper that I would not each chips out of - has opened up the great North/South divide again.

They start with a story about how BBC North director, Peter Salmon and Radio 5 Live controller Adrian Van Klaveren, will be renting property in Salford rather than moving here permanently.

And to illustrate the great divide the Daily Mail gives its readers a chart showing the cost of living in Twickenham (where Peter Salmon lives as opposed to Salford). Read it and weep.

Price of an average detached house: Twickenham; £1.1 million Salford; £228.750

What £1.85 million could buy: Twickenham; Peter Salmon's three-story semi Salford; numbers 14 - 26 Eccles Old Road.

Price of a pint: Twickenham; London Pride £3.15 Salford; Boddingtons bitter £2 (near the brewery!!, demolished ages ago).

People on benefit: Twickenham; 7% Salford; 21%

Local delicacy: Twickenham; Chargrilled Scotch Onglet Steak at Brula Bistro. Salford; Fish supper £3.70 at Neils Friery, Langworthy Road.

Crime: Twickenham; Violent Crimes 2,009, Burgalaries 979 Salford; Violent Crimes 4,657, Burgalaries 2, 182

Best known Architecture: Twickenham; Twickenham Stadium. Salford; Laburnum Street, the real Coronation Street.

Sorry but I can't write any more of this rubbish, apparently our local delicacy is Eccles cakes, are they not aware we eat them deep fried? They also fail to mention restaurants like Smiths in Eccles and Milan in Worsley.

No doubt this is "just a bit of fun", as opposed to a load of rubbish. But there's no mention of The Lowry, Salford Quays, no mention of Salford's proud history and heritage.

It's obviously hardly worth mentioning that Salford had the world's first free public library system, first free municipal swimming baths in Britain, the birthplace of vegetarianism, first street lighting, etc, etc.

Now, I must rush, I've got to feed the whippets and give the bairns some gruel before sending them oop t'chimney.

Try the Town Hall pub, or The Albert Edward or The Nags Head all in Eccles town centre

As Mr Flynn said, "a newspaper that he would not eat chips out of and has to excuse himself from writing this rubbish" has got it spot on, he would not comment on the tripe that The Daily Mail was writing, ignore the silly buggers, we Salfordians know our history.

Laburnum street was not the original coronation street, it was Archie Street in Ordsall called Coronarchie street by the locals

Ah, there it is again, the Daily Moan. They don't have a good word for anyone usually. And frankly, I'd rather have the fish supper and deep fried Eccles cakes - and I'm a Southerner! I am from Southampton, as southern as you can get without going over the Isle of Wight, and if I compared Southampton prices with London, London would still be expensive! I have become involved with Salford Online throught supporting a fundraiser for The Christie in Salford, with an unofficial fan page I help run for Christopher Eccleston (another fine product of Salford, who the Daily Moan once posted an article about, with a photo saying he was 'exhausted and slumped in a doorway' when the poor bloke was clearly just sat on a step making a phone call!) and from what I have seen, and the people I have chatted with, I would love to come there and visit. Please don't think all southerners believe this rubbish or feel the same!

The Mail was at again today, still confusing readers by calling us in Salford, as being from Manchester our younger rival city, not worth a toss that paper.

Interesting... the Salford Star has been told one of the reasons it won't be considered for council funding is because it doesn't publish enough "positive stories about MediaCity" etc. Maybe Salford Online will get some funding next time around. As for the sincerity of anything that is printed in the Salford Advertiser or delivered with a smiling chirp via Pamela Welsh, be very, very suspicious!

I would have thought most of it was tongue in cheek, the comparisons using monetary amounts don't mean a thing as London has always been far mre epensive. It is a fact that there is more crime and there are more benefits claimants in Salford. I'm not sure Milan in Worsley would have them flocking here either.

Typical Dail Mail sneering. If it was just about Peter Salmon as someone else on here has commented then why include statistics on benefits? And the fish supper jibe.

Well said Tony, read the article myself, another cheap jibe at the Northeners, what can you expect from that rag of a newspaper anyway?. Hurrah for the Blackshirts and all that rubbish in the 1930's. Salford can rise above these cheap shots, we have something that they haven't..integrity.
