Salford’s Bingo-in Mad

It seems there’s a new craze in Salford – online bingo. The numbers of gamblers from Salford topped 90 in an ITV-sponsored online bingo game, playing for a pot of nearly £50,000. Most say that they enjoy a little flutter before bed, as it makes the evening more exciting.

The interactive element of the show also means that Salford residents are getting their faces on TV as the games run through the night. ITV run three games per evening, starting at 12.40am, and users have to register with the TV channel beforehand, discouraging kids or underage gamblers from joining in.

One line of numbers is worth £25, two gets you £100, and a full house (all the numbers ticked off) can win you around a thousand pounds. You have to download new sets of cards for every new show, which you can then print off at home.

But really, does Salford really want to give its money over to a national TV company who’ve been branded liars and cheats for their part in the recent phone-in scandals?

ITV were handed a fine of nearly 7 million pounds by Ofcom this spring for rigging the results of phone-in competitions to the X-Factor and Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

And with bingo halls all around the country closing down – in part due to the game’s unglamorous image, partly to do with the unpopularity of the cigarette smoking ban – do Salford residents want to start gaming online?
