GMG Chairman Can’t Rule Out MEN Going Entirely Free

Guardian Media Group chairman Paul Myners has told a House of Lords committee that his group “could not rule out any possibilities” when responding to a question about the paper going entirely free.

In reply to questions from the Committtee which is examining various aspects of media ownership and in particular issues surrounding regional papers, Myners said that: “This is an industry which is under a considerable amount of pressure for change.

“Strong groups will thrive in that environment. Others won’t.

“We will see more consolidation in the ownership of regional titles, although that may not be immediate. It is difficult to identify who has the resources or appetite currently to be the driving force behind consolidation.”

To a specific question posed by Lord Fowler, about the economics of the MEN’s part paid/part free model, Myners added that “It is an economic model which accurately reflects the cost of distribution.”
