By Peter A Tully Snr AS the year draws to a bloody close, Britain seems no nearer tackling the violent gang culture on our streets. Two young men from very different backgrounds are dead today because of that culture. Seydou Diarrassouba was stabbed to death in front of Oxford Street sales crowds in what police believe was a clash between rival gangs. The victim, on bail accused of robbery and assault, had posted a gangsta video online boasting he had "shot men down". Yet at 18 he still had his life before him and could have been turned away from violence. Brilliant and gentle Indian student Anuj Bidve, 23, was fulfilling a lifetime's dream of visiting Britain when he was casually shot dead in the street by thugs in salford. A more savage, pointless, cruel waste of a fine young life it is impossible to imagine. What conclusions can we draw? The routine carrying of guns and knives proves there is still contempt for the law. This is the legacy of Justice Secretary Ken Clarke's soft approach to street crime. The Government, under pressure from The Sun, toughened laws on carrying knives. But the fear factor is still not there. Yobs should be so terrified of getting a mandatory jail sentence of several years without parole for carrying weapons that they just don't take the risk. So long as we stay soft, more young lives will ebb away on blood-soaked pavements while liberal politicians like Ken Clarke look the other way.
